Keynote Speaker
Hongwei Liu is the CEO of Mappedin, a Waterloo based indoor mapping company working with customers across 54 countries and maintaining a digital source of truth for over 3 billion square feet of indoor space. He has led the company’s growth from the founding team to the 100-person operation based out of their Waterloo office. He also serves on the boards of IP Ontario and the Grand River Hospital Foundation. Hongwei grew up in Ottawa and studied Electrical Engineering at the University of Waterloo.

Dr. Nada Basir is an Associate Professor of Strategic Management and the Associate Director of Undergraduate Programs at the Conrad School of Entrepreneurship and Business at the University of Waterloo. With a robust academic background that includes a Bachelor of Science in Molecular Biotechnology from the University of Waterloo, a Master of Science in Applied Biotechnology with a Business Specialization from McGill University, and a PhD in Strategic Management from the Schulich School of Business at York University, Dr. Basir integrates her scientific expertise with her passion for entrepreneurship and business strategy. Dr. Basir started her career in the pharmaceutical industry where she took on roles in Business Development, Marketing and consulting. Her professional journey is marked by a deep engagement with the entrepreneurial ecosystem, where she leverages her research to shape and inform her teaching and the startups and businesses she consults. In the classroom, Nada is known for her dynamic teaching style in courses like Entrepreneurial Strategy, Social Entrepreneurship, and Entrepreneurial Organizations. She brings real-world challenges into the academic environment, encouraging her students to think critically about the strategic decisions they will face as future entrepreneurs. Nada’s mentoring extends beyond the classroom, where she actively supports students in developing their ventures, offering guidance on everything from ideation to market strategy.

Michael is a veteran of the small business space in Canada, having spent the majority of his career with Canadian-founded, Canadian-led small businesses. His background is in manufacturing, primarily food & beverage, specializing in technology-based solutions to integrate manufacturing operations into the supply chain. After completing a degree in Systems Design Engineering at the University of Waterloo, Mike joined Callisto Integration – an engineering services start-up – as employee number five. Over the years he held various engineering, development, consulting and sales roles, and was part of the ownership group and executive team that sold Callisto Integration to Accenture in 2020. After a 3-year stint as part of Accenture’s Industry X team in Canada, Mike gave semi- retirement a shot, providing consulting services to start-ups. One of those engagements was with Farm Girl Cereal, a Canadian start-up that created and manufacturers a line of healthy, kid- friendly cereals, and that work morphed into his current role as Chief Operating Officer of Farm Girl. Mike has served on the Manufacturing Enterprise Solutions Association (MESA) board, and served as an Advisory Board member for Leyline.IO, a fintech start-up based in New York. Mike currently sits on the Board of Directors of HOOTC (Hamilton Out of the Cold), an organization dedicated to serving hot, nutritious meals to those most in need in our community. Mike and his wife have three grown kids, and occupy their spare time sailing, hiking, and traveling.
