Tuition Costs

Per term, tuition typically costs $5000 to $6500. Fall term has more fees, so costs more. Cost depends on number of courses, if you are using Dalhousie insurance, which program you are in and various fees that are added on.

Tuition cost also tend to go up over the years.

Tuition also costs more for international students. International student are charged an additional fee of around ~$7500, depending on the year and program.

Late payment costs an additional $50.

Textbooks and Supplies

Tips
- WAIT to buy textbooks etc. until after the first day of class, which will be a syllabus overview and introduction. The professor may change if a textbook is mandatory or not.
- If you want to buy new textbooks and supplies or if you need a specific supply for a class, the Dalhousie Bookstore in the basement of the Student Union Building sells most supplies (ask your prof) as well as Dalhousie-branded clothing, water bottles, lanyards, etc.
- Textbooks can be really expensive - some are over $200. The bookstore resells used textbooks, and many (MANY) student are looking to sell textbooks. Check Facebook marketplace, Kijiji and other used item sites if you want to find a cheaper copy.
- Ask your prof if there is a required/recommended edition of the textbook so you don’t get the wrong used copy.
- Other supplies (lab coats, goggles, novels, notebooks) are also available used from other students, or even at other stores for cheaper.
- Online/digital versions of textbooks are often available to rent (check out Z-Library) for much cheaper than paper copies. While they are harder to use in some ways, this can help you save more.
- Another way to avoid buying new copies of textbooks is to share with classmates, split with other students who are taking it another semester, or asking a classmate to send photos of necessary pages.
- While it is better to be safe than sorry, often recommended textbooks (and sometimes even mandatory ones) are not needed to complete the course. Ask students who took the course with the same prof for advice if you need.
